Many Mexican fisheries are transitioning towards sustainability through the implementation of Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs). At the same time, there is growing interest from buyers to source sustainable seafood in Mexico. WWF does extensive work with the private sector to help companies like Hyatt, Hilton and Royal Caribbean leverage their purchasing power to transition their seafood supply chains toward more sustainable, responsible practices. This work includes supporting fisheries in transition toward meeting the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard. WWF is also working with industry to promote local demand in Mexico for product coming from Mexican FIPs that are transitioning domestic supply towards sustainability.
WWF is convening a Sustainable Seafood Roundtable to bring together key fishery stakeholders including buyers, producers and intermediaries to further explore the opportunities for and challenges to sourcing responsible seafood in Mexico.
WWF believes the presentations and panels planned for this event will provide a unique opportunity for key stakeholders of the seafood supply chain in Mexico to learn from each other and explore the possibilities of adopting more sustainable practices.
