Position open: Oil and Gas Transition Coordinator

In order to stay within the limits of 1.5°C global warming, we must rapidly and efficiently transform our energy systems away from fossil fuels to renewables. Because of this, we have formed an Oil and Gas Transition Coordinator position.  

The main goal of this position is to manage the growth of WWF’s oil and gas internal capacity, in close cooperation with the Global Oil and Gas Lead; providing strategic direction and thought leadership; and working with offices across the WWF-Network to implement WWF’s Oil and Gas Policy. 

The main functions are providing strategic direction, tactical leadership, and coordination of the internal development and external implementation of WWF’s Oil and Gas Policy. At the global level, the Oil and Gas Transition Coordinator will be directly involved with the practical development, implementation and adaptation of strategies, implementation plans, campaigns, and securing funding for the Network. At the national level, the Co-ordinator will help WWF offices to prepare, adapt/develop and implement strategies and work plans. 

Main responsibilities:  
  • Further develop and operationalize the global strategy and implementation plan for WWF’s oil and gas work to deliver on the Oil and Gas Policy, and support National Offices with fundraising efforts.
  • Support National Offices developing work plans based on the global strategy, adapt to changes on an ongoing basis, and build internal capacity on oil and gas. 
  • Build the motivation and engagement of National Offices and ensure the development and use of a toolkit for implementation at the local level. 
  • Build external relations and strategic partnerships with other groups in the global oil and gas movement, and other related stakeholders.  
  • Analyse climate risks related to oil and gas production and build sufficient understanding to help address queries in the WWF-Sight mapping tool and the Rystad database. 
  • Work independently and strategically, with capacity to give final advice in areas of responsibility, delivering high quality work, and on time.  

Our ideal candidate has:   
  • A Master’s degree in energy, climate change, biodiversity, finance, strategic communications or a related field.  
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate, coordinate, engage, and collaborate with colleagues in different cultures and organizations and is a solid network builder.  
  • At least five years’ work experience of global advocacy issues, with proven practical experience of making and executing strategies and campaigns to influence governments and business behaviour.  
  • At least three years of work experience related to the energy sector, and with an understanding of what is needed to give momentum to the energy transition   
  • Ability to track fast changing trends, both related to a complex energy system in rapid transition, and geopolitical and industrial interests, and be strategic about where WWF can make most impact and influence  
  • Perfect command of English (oral and written) required, with other language skills an asset. 

This position will work with colleagues at the hosting office, as well as with WWF-Norway (which leads the WWF network’s oil and gas work), and in the global WWF Network.  

Some travel would be expected.

Duration: The time frame of the position is initially 3 years with possibility to be prolonged.
