Tourist Destinations in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

The Monarch butterfly hibernation sanctuaries in the States of Mexico and Michoacan open their tourist services to the public in November every year, since by then the butterflies are practically established in the colonies. Therefore, visitors can enjoy this natural wonder from December to March.

In December and January, which are considered the stability months of the colonies, butterflies remain almost motionless in the tree branches. Visitors may watch the logs and branches of the fir trees covered with Monarch butterflies, which seem like dry leaves that have not fallen down.

During February and March, when the Monarch has acquired reproductive maturity thanks tothe temperature increase at the hibernation sites, butterflies detach more frequently from the trees and form a unique spectacle: millions of butterflies flying as clouds that darken the sky and the forests that surround the colonies, with a unique sound - like a whisper of thousands of voices - of the fluttering of wings of so many butterflies that, in spite of their huge number, never crash with one another.
