How to get there:
In your own transportation: This sanctuary, which has been open to the public since the mid 1990s, has access through the same route which arrives in Zitácuaro from Morelia and from Mexico but, in this case, you have to go to Angangueo and, after approximately 8 kms towards San José del Rincón in the State of Mexico, you arrive at Llano de las Papas. There you will find the "Llano de las Papas Central Research Station", which is part ofthe management office of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. To the left you can find the Ejido Cerro Prieto property, which renders tourist services. You can also reach this sanctuary by car through the State of Mexico along the route which goes from Toluca to Atlacomulco, continuing by El Oro and Tlalpujahua, where there is a direct access to Sierra Chincua.

By bus: The best route from Mexico City is to take the bus for Zitacuaro at the Terminal Poniente (Western Bus Terminal), next to the Observatorio Metro Station. Then, you can take a bus from Zitacuaro to Angangueo, where you can take a taxi to get to the sanctuary. It is also possible to take a bus directly from Zitacuaro to Tlalpujahua to get to Llano de las Papas and to enter the sanctuary.
